SOCIAL DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY

Today the doctrine of the Trinity has moved from being largely neglected to becoming somewhat overworked, at least in some quarters. It has become fashionable to think of the Trinity as being like three human persons in an intimate fellowship. There is a famous icon painted by Andrei Rublev from the fifteenth century, found on the front cover of this book, which portrays the Trinity as three men seated round a table, based on the account of Genesis 18. Such thinking can lead in a tritheist direction if one is not careful – just as comparing God to one person can lead to Modalism. (*Augustine produced a series of analogies comparing God to the memory, understanding and will of a single person.) It is important not to rely solely on one analogy.[1]

There are many today who seek to argue from their social doctrine of the Trinity to the organization of human society, especially using it as the basis for an ‘anti-hierarchical egalitarianism’. A good example of this is Jürgen Moltmann in his The Trinity and the Kingdom of God. Without going into the details of this, two fundamental problems can be mentioned.
